Early adopter bugs :)

Hi fellow DMNO owners!

I just received mine and have been playing with this beauty for a couple of days. The way the controls are set up, the lovely filter configuration, USB feedback option and play modes are already taking me to strange and beautiful places.

I thought it could be nice with a separate topic to report and discuss any bugs or inconsitencies found in these early days of this synth in a constructive manner.

I’ll list a few I’ve found:

Bugs:

– Manual mode does not respect the Performance Control faders –
To reproduce set LFO2 switch to ON, set faders to the lowest position, init patch, then press MANUAL button. The pitch and filter cutoff is affected by the lfo and you have to bring the faders up and down again to make it not.

User manual inconsistencies:

– USB feedback does not work as described –
Manual says to set the Aux Out Source to USB Audio to do feedback via DMNO1 mixer ext in, however I have to set it to DMNO1 or Main Mix for it to work. When set to DMNO1 only half the notes played feed back when the Play Mode is set to single. When set to Main Mix no notes feedback in single Play Mode, while in dual or split they do.

– Arpeggiator “As Played” mode not available –
Manual lists this as one of the available play modes

– Arpeggiator “Arp hold” page not available –
Manual says it should be possible to choose between Latch or Smart. Without this page the Latch mode can not be chosen.

Did Patch 1.9 that was just released address any of your issues?

Good spot! Just downloaded now and will update the synth shortly.

@udo-audio @DDS what are the changes in the latest 1.9 firmware?

It’s sounding awesome so far but I’ve found a couple minor issues.

Is anyone else’s tap tempo working?

Also is there a way to change the tempo by 1bpm on the synth rather than midi syncing it to a particular tempo?

Had mine for a couple of days - not noticed any of these bugs but will check over the next few days.

Hi Mcgvr,
My tap tempo button does not work either. Hopefully they will fix this!

I can also confirm using the clock knob its impossible to dial in 1bpm increments.

I’ve double checked on the latest firmware and all bugs and inconsistencies are still there. Seeing as these are very easy bugs to check for (not random glitches) saying you haven’t noticed them is not really helpful unless you test the procedure  If your tap tempo button DOES work please let us know as that will indicate there is something wrong with our synths.

So I’ve been playing with my DMNO for a couple of weeks now, and I’ve noticed quite a few more bugs and user manual inconsistencies. These are all checked on firmware 1.9. Some of these are quite substantial and frustrating (to me at least) so hopefully they will be sorted soon :folded_hands:

–Bugs–

Not able to select trig only on Performance Control
To reproduce try setting the switch to the lowest setting (TRIG). The screen does not reflect the change showing it’s stuck on AT + TRIG, and if you press down to engage aftertouch you will hear the modulation.

Letting go of the sustain pedal (foot switch) kills held notes
Try holding down a note. Press and release the sustain pedal while keeping the note held down. It kills the sound.

Envelope 3 Invert and Loop setting affects Envelope 1 instead of envelope 3
To reproduce set the VCA switch to middle position (envelope 3). Use the encoder below the screen to set the mode to invert or loop and you will hear it doesn’t affect envelope 3. If you turn up ENV1 modulation on the filter, you will hear that instead this setting overrides the envelope 1 switch.

Spy mode does not work for filter routing switch
To reproduce engage spy mode. Flicking the filter routing switch to inspect the current filter setting will actually change the filter mode.

–User manual inconsistencies–

No LFO1 clock synchronisation setting
The manual says we should be able to activate clock synchronisation via the modulation settings menu. There is no such setting.

I’ve not updated to 1.9 but went through some of these bugs as best I could.

Not able to select trig only on Performance Control
worked as expected with the bender only

Letting go of the sustain pedal (foot switch) kills held notes
seemed to work fine

Envelope 3 Invert and Loop setting affects Envelope 1 instead of envelope 3
agree this does not seem to work as expected -

Spy mode does not work for filter routing switch
Agree flicking switch changes filter mode

No LFO1 clock synchronisation setting
Agree no setting available that I can find. Maybe a workaround would be to use the env. Follower as a mod source and LFO rate as destination - not ideal.

as mentioned I’ve not updated the firmware so perhaps some things got messed up in the update

Tap tempo not working and also jumping in increments of 2 bpm when turning the clock pot.

When I select a performance in a bank, I can select other performances with the 1-8 buttons, but for patches, I have to use the knobs below the display. Do any of you also have this bug?

Hi Sparth!

Yes, I can confirm not beeing able to select patches with the buttons.

Just tried, same here.

I see patch 1.12 just dropped, possibly addressing some of the aforementioned behavior.

First post here, let me start by saying that I’m really impressed by the DMNO’s sound and versatility!

Just like with the previous firmware, I can’t find any release notes or a post on the forum. It feels a bit odd to have to find out what bugs have been solved by testing ourselves, no?

I found a bug with the (shift) release of ENV 2 (VCA) - still there on 1.12. If I first change the release and change the decay afterwards, the release changes again with the decay setting.

Try setting A and D to minimum, S and R to max. Do the same with ENV 3. Now on ENV1 set D to max and back to min and play again. The R is also back to minimum. You can compare to env 3 with the switch, should be the same, but it isn’t. Is that my unit?
I have tried with the Hold and Release stage of env 1 and every shift function there works as expected.

Spying on a shift function is another challenge. The DMNO really needs a catch mode IMO, specifically with the ADS(R) implementation. Every time you decide to change one of the shift functions of the envelope, the main function no longer corresponds to the slider. So if you move it, it will jump, unless you use spy mode.

I have some issues with shift mode and the numbered control buttons as well. If you use one of those, you go out of shift mode, which is not in line with how shift mode works. I’ve lost quite a few patches I was working on because it takes me to another preset instead of to the next menu.
Shift+MPE takes you straight to a preset instead of just doing nothing until MPE is ready.

agreed, the lack of patch notes is not good

Here’s a very easily fixed but kind of funny one:

If like me you do not have perfect pitch, and you’re wondering why all your playing sounds ‘off’, check the global transpose setting (shift+6), apparently my unit shipped with global transpose set a semitone down? Very easy fix but that genuinely threw me when I was trying to play it with my other synths tonight

Got this response to my question re: mpe and firmware!

Unfortunately, I cannot provide you with an exact date at this stage as to when MPE will be supported.

As for the changes introduced with version 1.12:

Usability Improvements

  • Hold/sustain pedal canonical in Cascade/Series and Dual play modes

  • Push play mode encoder for selected layer swap in Single and Dual play modes to match manual

  • In Single mode, performance control section controls ignore the layer select toggle and ‘always do something’.

Bugfixes

  • Envelope follower reconnected to gate trigger; default setting is disabled

  • Octave lever behaviour fix for DMNO 2

  • Modulation layer select toggle switch fix (allowed proper selection of DMNO 2 only)
