So the fact that the DMNO’s oscillators can’t be free-run has been a real pain-point for me when it comes to building patches. If you’re detuning identical waveforms against each-other you end up with some really naff sounding phase issues due to the waveforms being re-triggered at zero-crossing with every note on. At worst it sounds like a 90s ROMpler and it’s genuinely frustrating that such a rudimentary option for a digital / hybrid synth isn’t included in the current firmware.
However, when fiddling around with my DMNO last night, I discovered a reliable workaround! If you push the decay and sustain on ENV2 / VCA all the way up, it effectively forces the oscillators into free-running. You can detune a couple of saw-waves against each-other, and it will sound to all intents and purposes, a lot like you’d expect an analogue synth to sound. It works great in mono, poly and binaural.
Of course the big caveat with this is that you lose ENV2 as a way to shape your sound, and you have to rely on the filter envelope exclusively. But, that may not matter for the kind of sounds you want to make, especially if, like me, your objective was stuff like detuned EBM basslines and stabs. It’s a very hacky workaround, and an actual osc freerun option in the voicing section is imo sorely needed, but I hope this at least helps some people with getting the sounds they want. I’ll upload a video demonstrating how this is done when I have the time.
tl;dr you can force a hacky version of osc freerun on your DMNO by maxing out the decay and sustain time on ENV2
