Gemini Factory Sounds Pretty Underwhelming

I think the first thing that a lot of people do when they check out a new synth is start with the patches (and performances in this case). In my opinion, they are in a very bad condition. Many of them are super quiet, while others don’t really work at all. If I adjust the volume, the next patch can blast my ears. I think, in general, that the last firmware updates really messed up a lot of the sounds. I love my Super Gemini, but I really hope there will be new patches/performances soon or some fixes for the current ones. I wonder what other Gemini users think about that - please let me know!

Yeah, I tend to agree. I’m not a great sound designer so I love to surf presets. Creating sounds is fun though. Back to the presets, there’s probably only 6 or 7 I find interesting or usable but that’s my lack of skill definitely!

Don’t own the Gemini but do own the S6 , have to agree that generally I find presets on UDO products to be somewhat dull, that said I am fully aware that UDO sound programmers made sounds to attract a wide range of musicians . I find it best to edit sounds (from wherever ) to meet my requirements , relatively easy on the S6, that said something seems to be lacking when it comes to velocity curves , great sounds just fall out of the synth but are they musical and playable - well that’s another question. Hoping that the soon to be issued poly AT key-bed will offer improved playability , velocity curves and AT performance .

Thank you @Andrew for the hint with the velocity curves - it was a real eye opener for me today and I realised that they are indeed problematic. If I turn the dynamics off, most of the patches have a similar volume and sound much better. The problem is that even if I press the keys very strongly I’ll not achieve the same volume as if I turn the dynamics completely off and because I need so much force for higher velocities I also trigger aftertouch sometimes. Please @udo-audio let the user adjust the velocity sensitivity/curves. I think the synths would greatly benefit from that!

I don’t know if I would agree. I think the factory patches and performances are there to showcase some of what the Gemini can do, so they cover a wide range. I’ve used some of the arps and basses, and some of the brassy pad stuff, and one of the factory patches is a really cool Wurlitzer Electric Piano sound that’s rather nice. Personally haven’t had any issue with volume fluctuation’s.

The magic of the Gemini IMO is using it in manual mode and creating the sounds you want yourself. And this is coming from someone who never did any sort of sound design before on synths outside of preset tweaking.

Here’s a pretty cool patch set that may be of interest, sounds really good if you’re not looking to make your own sounds! https://youtu.be/lOs6yDc2EbA

I agree tbh - I found them to vary in quality quite a lot.

Also as someone who owned a Super 6 and upgraded to a Super Gemini - I found the presets that UDO shared for the S6 to be of a better quality; that’s probably because there were more and so I could curate them better to my taste.

Its a shame that S6 presets can’t be shared with the Gemini; in theory the Gemini only has more features than the S6 so should be compatible (although appreciate that the software means there are currently differences) Hopefully that can be fixed in later updates…
