Musing on this

I’m just watching one of the 80 YouTuber Influencer videos out this morning on the Moog Muse. Is it just me or does the concept and flow of this thing look somehow…familiar…to anyone with a UDO synth?

Imitation is the highest form of flattery. In this case neither the sound or looks match the Udo synths.

Yeah I don’t think they exactly pulled a Behringer here but I have this vibe like someone at Moog looked over at UDO and thought, ‘we can cram some of these concepts into an uglier case and have at it!’

Much of the layout harks back to earlier Moog stuff (the sliders are those on the Polymoog, MG Concertmate and Taurus). The mod stuff/section more buttons etc are taken from One. Some of the aesthetics seem to nod to Yamaha CS and Roland Jupiter too.

As an American, I can say that we have trouble in the aesthetic department. The Moog looks like a child’s play thing. There are unnecessary embellishments(triangles in the corner of each section), cheap looking buttons, and other visually distracting elements. If you’ve seen a Ford truck like the Raptor, you kow what I mean about American style. Sorry that we have unleashed a lack of refinement on the world. I will say in our defense that the Prophet 10 is stunning, and the Rivian electric truck is also stunning. Unfortunately, we have some work to do in becoming less brutish. More of everything is our MO.

Just had a look at the Matt Johnson review of the Moog - he seems to think its great , as good as the Moog One etc but any synth sounds fantastic with him playing it (wonder who sponsored his review) anyway looking at this months Sound on Sound magazine , does anyone else think that the new Arturia Polybrute 12 looks very much like a missing UDO synth or is it just me.

Sorry that I am insisting (as a S6 owner), but the Moog Muse sounds phenomenal to my ears. Yes, some UI parts look cheap, yes, the stereo features may be copied from S6, but the delay/reverb is what I would have expected from S6 (but never was added via firmware update) and some other cool features shout “I want it”. It is the second synth after S6 in 2019 which I really “need”. I guess, it will sell well in the non-Behringer world.

The triangles are not superfluous - they are buttons which bring up a menu of deeper functions related to that particular section, a feature inherited from the One.

I’ve just sold my Summit to a friend today and am now looking hard at Muse and at Supers Gemini and 8. I really liked Summit but its keybed was something I really disliked.

Super Gemini it’s a no-brainer.

I wish it were that simple.

I object. Triangles are fine for pizza slices, but not on my synth. Some people do like rectangle pizza slices, and that’s their choice. I do think the Muse sounds pretty good, but I don’t like that the stereo functionality is tied to the delay. I never use the delay on my Super 6. I don’t want that baked into my takes. The UDO synths have binaural capabilities at the oscillator level. No one else is copying this method, and it does help make a sound blend with other instruments. The Muse has some generative capabilities and stuff borrowed from Eurorack. I don’t think it sounds quite as good as the Prophet. Hoping UDO puts a few Super 8s into the hands of youtubers, otherwise Moog might eat their lunch. A lot of mentions of food here, maybe I’m hungry.

Also, I will add that having a screen on a synth is a big distraction. UDO is right to be anti-screen. George is the Steve Jobs of synths. Good on him for creating amazing synths.

So agree, UDO need to add a reverb to the S6 Spec , maybe as a direct replacement to the chorus for those who want it.
