Got the email about this earlier. Looks really interesting. Attaches magnetically to the chassis of your synth and plugs into the expression port. Nice!
Brilliant!
@udo-audio Did you leave that space above the keyboard on the S6 for this controller on purpose? Was that the plan all along?
Iām very tempted, though the price is a bit high when you take european VAT into account.
But together with the Super Touch this would turn my S6 into some kind of pocket CS80 and who wouldnāt want to have that?
@udo-audio Will this perfect ribbon controller also be available at U.D.O dealers or only online?
any road, I first have to find a perfect spot for it on my S6 desktop
@waxdoctor we would like to give it to dealers as soon as itās in stock. Hopefully they will take it on. Unlike our main instruments, we will continue to sell these accessories direct.
@droy the space in the super 6 was deliberate but more for ergonomic reasons! Yes the price is not the cheapest but when you feel the quality and weight of it, you will hopefully see why we chose to spend a bit more on the manufacture to make it a solid, quality offering. I think itās pretty too!
Wow, okay Iām definitely grabbing this in the next week. That was my one disappointment in getting the 8 over the Gemini. I just read an article about consumers wanting more customizable products. Seems UDO is on trend. I tried asking Sequential to change the cv input on the Prophet to unquantized so I could use a ribbon, but I was met with a bunch ot puritanism. Thanks for making this happen!
Iām surprised the cable sleeve isnāt white to match the UDO colour scheme.
They have the black and blue models to consider. Iāll grab a white shrink tube and cover the part that rests on the surface.
Looks interesting. How will it behave when paired with a non-UDO synth? (I am thinking of using it with a Clavia Nord Wave.)
Itās passive, so behaves like an expression pedal for non UDO products. How this is interpreted will depend on how the expression pedal response is mapped. For UDO products it will behave much the same way as the Gemini slide control which I worked on a lot to get it feeling natural and musical with pitch expression.
Question, what if i donāt want it to behave like the Gemini slide control on say a super6? Iāve mapped most of my main macro controls that would normally be on a modwheel to the expression input. Can i use the ribbon like a regular expression device on a UDO product? And how does it behave, does it snap back to zero on release, or stay in the last touched position? will it be middle or leftmost position as a default?
@Black_Materia like the Gemini, when you map the Ribbon to a mod matrix destination it disconnects it from default āintelligent pitchā mode.
In pitch mode, expression is per note. The movement is relative (pickup at press position). It affects keys pressed (not sustained with pedal or HOLD switch) and is latching until it is reset by a new keypress. Release tails are unaffected. This allows natural articulation of particular notes in a performance, and avoids the seasickness bending notes ringing out or held chords.
The behaviour in mod matrix mode is also relative, but unlike pitch, it slides back to zero quickly but smoothly when the ribbon is released.
This has worked well for Gemini users so far and I am considering alternate modes (there are more conceivable than ārelativeā and ālatchingā considering per-note expression already employed for pitch) to coincide with the shipping of the new slide controllers.
I have an S6 and an SG.
Why is shipping the ribbon to the US so absurdly expensive?
Iām slightly sad itās wide enough to cover the words āSuper 6ā etc on the Super 6ās front panel, but otherwise ā¦
Ooh
And
Yay!
And
Wowsers, didnāt see this coming!
Right! And Iām so glad I didnāt put the ST49 sticker where they suggest it should go, because it looks like that will get in the way of the ribbon, too
@droy if the ST49 sticker is put where we guided above the lowest C key it wonāt interfere with the ribbon. If youāve put elsewhere let us know and weāll send a new ST49 sticker.
Iāve measured correctly, havenāt I? It will sit over the Super 6 decal?
Obviously not a biggie! Just being OCD
The āSuper 6ā print will be covered yes but it wonāt interfere with the ST49 decal if it was placed where guided.
Thanks, Iāll just wait for the ribbon controller before I place the sticker
@udo-audio will you be showing the ribbon at Synthfest this Saturday?
