I feel a bit of a dummy asking this but I’m struggling to get my head around the whole patch/performance thing on the SG. I’ve built some nice patches only to seemingly lose them when trying to save. How do you load a saved patch into a performance? I’ve read the manual over but it just seems to tell you how to load and save each but not how they interact if that makes sense? I’m not a synth novice but this is doing my head in! I’m losing track of what is where (and losing my work which is really frustrating)
I’m assuming if I want to save the status of the keyboard controls (single/split/dual) I need to save a performance? Same for the voice assign section? It feels like Those sections don’t reflect what I had them set to when I recall a saved patch.. Can a perf just have one single layer patch in it? The lack of a screen is boggling my mind even more in regard of the whole patch/performance thing.
if someone could chime in and explain it I’d really appreciate it. Before it makes me cry. Again.
The keyboard controls only really have meaning for Performances. You can indeed save a Performance with the control set to Single - but if I remember correctly it will default to the Upper Layer upon loading, so if you are using it just to save a patch for some reason (I did this when I ran out of space once), try to use the Upper Layer. I think this is pretty much the only difference between single patches and patches combined into performances (that and the Layer Detune setting). Voice Assign should be saved with either method.
Saving shouldn’t give you any trouble if things are working correctly. To save you just hold the button of the desired slot for about 3 seconds, the led will be steady once a patch/perf is saved, and when it is loaded, until it is changed. A flashing led indicates a changed/altered patch/perf, you can press such a button to toggle between the two, thus comparing the saved to the altered version.
I don’t have my SG at the minute to check, but the only issue for me sometimes was losing track of what slots were empty. I started keeping a little notebook.
One way to “lose a patch” is to accidentally load a different one by pressing rather than holding on a slot that is already full - but in this case you should be able to use the toggle/compare method I mentioned above: just press the button again and it should start flashing and return you to your previous state - then you can try again to find an empty slot (or the correct one you are trying to overwrite). It’s pretty straightforward once you’ve understood this.
Thanks for the link. I’m aware of that thread and greatly appreciate your efforts in this regard.
Having browsed through the thread, it seems you’re close to a release for both Mac and windows. Mouths of ‘gift horses’ aside, do you have any plans to code this for mobile devices as well? A phone or tablet resting in that empty left corner of the SG, running your editor…awesome.
Unfortunately, the development software I’m using is not available on mobile device…
I would have hoped for a SG MkII with a nice large screen (like the Modal 002) in that area but I’m afraid this will stay as a dream
