When is the new Firmware going to be released?

Another week of deafening silence.

Try filling it with music from the synth you bought because you liked what it could do?

It’s possible to love the heck out of this wonderful instrument and still pine for an update, you know.

Of course it is. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you that time spent pining is time lost for creating. Do you best work with what is in front of you and leave the future for later.

I get the Zen nature of your sentiment man, but I kinda think its missing the point of the post here. How much I use and enjoy my synth (a lot) has no bearing on my expectation that a company act professionally.

The amount of things that have been mentioned by UDO and that have either not been delivered or had their expectations proactively managed is staggering at this point. The S6 firmware was reported to be a top priority following Superbooth this year and would be coming out ASAP. Geminis were due out in the fall. A UDO shop was coming “soon” to the website. Roles were being opened to move the company forward. They were working away on an MPE video with Hazel Mills……

To be clear, Im not saying they should have completed all these things. It’s 2023, things are difficult and exceedingly expensive out there. I recognize that making your second flagship synth in a few years is a huge task. But someone at UDO has had the time to come here and type paragraphs about how many VCAs the S6 has, but not a two sentence update on any one of the above listed items. Is that reasonable?

Companies should be more aware that these now, in modern times, are big boys toys first and instruments second, probably for most people.

People don’t buy them to be creative or record music with, they buy them to fart around with, and to have fun with, and new features are like DLC in videogames. The thirst can never be quenched in that regard.

The Super 6 performs more than well enough as an instrument. As a toy it hasn’t produced any new tricks in a while and that upsets some people. They even go as far as to label it as “dead”, even though it works perfectly.

There are only two things: what exists, and the idea of what might be. You can’t make music on an idea, so I’d argue for spending your attention on the things that exists rather than ideas that may be. You could carefully collect and tabulate a list of 10,000 unfulfilled promises and neglected communiques. 100,000! A million! None of it makes ideas more useful or brings them closer to existence, so seems like a big fat waste to me ¯\(ツ)

But the only thing more frivolous than wasting attention on unfulfilled ideas is wasting it on replies to comments about unfulfilled ideas. So if you have some compulsion that drives you to obsess over these things, I leave you to it. Best luck!

@jemmons with all due respect, if replying to comments about unfulfilled ideas is an even more frivolous waste of attention, that makes your comment rather hypocritical given that is exactly what you are doing.

While I agree with your sentiment of focusing most of your energy on what you have rather that on what you don’t have, I don’t think it adds anything productive to the discussion, other than your opinion on what people should and should not do, despite you not practicing what you preach.

At the end of the day, people have invested a significant sum of money in an instrument, one designed with upgradability in mind via firmware. It’s not like an acoustic piano or even an electric guitar that just does what it does. Things are promised, updates will be requested, ideas will be generated. By writing them down in places like this, it gives people a voice, one that can be heard by UDO and potentially acted on. I therefore fundamentally disagree that none of it makes ideas more useful or brings them closer to existence.

Sorry that was unclear. Yes, in that comment I hoped to convey that it was, in fact, me who was replying to comments about unfulfilled ideas. I meant to acknowledge that, by bothering to reply, I was being a hypocrite. Just as you have subsequently pointed out. Hope that clears it up for you.

As to what is or is not productive, I’m sorry you see my opinion as less productive than the hard facts of someone writing a post to say that there have been no posts or how unhappy they are because a thing they otherwise love doesn’t have a “1” before it’s version number or how they made an “investment” in a musical instrument that they somehow expected to pay off by watching it continuously morph into something new rather than using it to make music, yes, precisely like a piano or guitar.

I’ll strive to bring better content should I bother in the future.

It does, thank you.

Here’s the thing…why do you assume that people who pay attention to new features and fixes just sit there and watch their instrument morph into something new without actually enjoying it and using it for its intended purpose, to create music? It’s not a mutually exclusive activity - people can still enjoy the fruits of their labour while also wishing for new features and bugs to be fixed.

You might think it’s a big fat waste of time being vocal about it, plenty would disagree, hence…

Predictable smarmy remark, right on cue.

Gemini Firmware is at V1.9 while S6 is at 0.53…
Not a complaint - just wondering what that means.

I’ve only been an S6 owner and in the forum here since the beginning of the year, so I’m curious to hear from the old guard on this. Did UDO used to be more communicative about updates, progress and or firmware in general? Is the radio silence par for the course or a recent development? Some old posts here would seem to indicate the silence on these matters is new, but again, I wasn’t here to know that for sure.

They only ever gave vague and infrequent informal communication about updates - better than some companies, worse than others. If I was to guess the new Super 6 FW will be 1.0 or higher and it is probably ready or very close to it.

You can appreciate they want to get it right and have been very busy recently. I don’t think they simply abandoned the S6 development to focus on the new synth but maybe a new plan materialised and it was put on the back burner. The Gemini is an extension of the Super 6 after all.

UDO obviously don’t want to publish their plans in detail for a reason but nothing is abandoned - far from it.

Never said anything was abandoned.
Just curious if this firmware cycle has been quieter than previous ones. From your answer, it sounds like it has been, if only slightly. Thanks for the input!

The time frame between firmware updates has been pretty consistent. Which is fine and better than other companies out there. Though the lack of communication about it is new.
Normally they would have chimed into a thread like this one to say “hey - we are here and we’re working on it - be patient, we are working through the feature requests etc…hopefully soon.”

Hi, I got as far as trialling some new super 6 OS firmware with a few testers that had a number of features and fixes that have been called for.

It still has some work to make it release ready and now we’ve got Gemini over the line I’m right back on it.

We’re a small bit dedicated team and the founders have to sweat it out for many years juggling the development and the business while income can’t support permanent development team. It’s coming though I hope!

Expanding the product line is what keeps us alive and allows us to offer the direct support for our existing product range.

Going to post the release notes of what we got as far as trialling. It’s all my development work, and I work, unfortunately, quite slowly, but I like to think we always get there in the end!

@BenG I do keep abreast of things here but I have to be careful not to get in a position where people wait to demand responses from me on a forum. Not becuase I wouldnt want to, but just because I can’t be on every thread all at once (+email, +insta, etc.), generally our mailing list is the best place to hear about whats going on.

@focalsounds it’s certainly fair to prompt me on it aas its been a bit of time. We got a long way with v1.0(+) then I had to pause for a little while for a few reasons but the Super 6 is here on my desk with the umbelicals all plugged in and ready to go. Stay tuned
